Relationships and Sex Education will be statutory in all secondary schools from September 2020. In addition, reduction in sexual health services mean both that schools are increasingly losing access to external support to deliver sexual health teaching, and that young people have fewer places to go to access factual information. It is therefore more important than ever that young people can access information and advice about sexual health at school and this course will give teachers and other staff the confidence to deliver lessons on STIs, contraception, puberty and sexual health.
This course is suitable for all teachers and staff who deliver lessons on sexual health, but especially those who have no background in sexual health or are new to sexual health teaching. Participants will work individually and in groups to handle a range of teaching resources and lesson plans. The course will be very interactive, with many opportunities to learn from colleagues.
Participants will:
- Handle a wide range of teaching resources
- Gain a thorough understanding of the legislation surrounding teaching sexual health
- Be aware of approaches to answer students' questions on sensitive subjects
- Increase their confidence to deliver lessons on sexual health, STIs, contraception and puberty
- Identify good practice and understand how to assess, monitor and evaluate teaching and learning
- Understand how best to facilitate consultation with staff, pupils and parents
This course also equips participants to use Sex Ed Sorted – a suite of Key Stage 3 lesson materials focused on sexual and reproductive health, developed by the Sex Education Forum for the ‘Healthy Minds’ programme.
The facilitator for this course is our Senior RSE Trainer Dr Eleanor Draeger. She is a sexual health doctor with 16 years’ experience in the NHS, including 10 years specialising in Sexual Health and HIV
